1987 Capital League, City Conference 0-0-0
Team notes: Formed from the Lee Valley Warriors. Were
affiliated to the Capital League in 1987.
This is written by an ex-player of the Barbarians, "The Barbarians “87-88” were
formed from the Lee Valley Warriors and played the Capital league’s inaugural season
City Division; I believe that we WON that division after losing only one game. We over powered
almost every team we played and unfortunately inflicted injuries (not from unsportsmanlike
conduct as we were NEVER flagged by a ref), but the administration felt that we were too
fierce for the other teams in the division. Unfortunately we were then banned from playing in the BNGL by Dave Quincey the following
season after a fight broke out when playing at Chelmsford Cherokee and a few of their team
members were hurt; the fight was provoked by their racist comments and chants (only now
recognized as a problem in the UK), and this was fuelled by the coach at the time after they
went ahead in the second half after trailing. One or two of my team members faced prosecution
as a result and I believe that we were the first team to make the evening standard under its
“Crime” section and not sports!! We were known as the second hardest hitting team after the Ravens, Richard Dunkley,
“big bird” Errol Phillips and others from the Ravens would attend regularly to
practice with our team just for the hitting drills in particular!! Rory Hunte was
head coach and Gary Drew was offensive line coach at the time. Key players included Jason
Elliot (QB)(yes that is where he started!!) Martin “Juggernaught” Joseph (RB)
(LB), Bola Aiyede (MLB).
